LIFT: Elevating Women in Fintech

Having someone to guide you on the path to success is one of the greatest assets a budding entrepreneur can have. Throughout my own journey, I’ve had the honor of interacting and learning from some real powerhouse leaders in the industry.

As a female business owner in the fintech sector, I’ve seen firsthand how little representation there is in the space. Even though there have definite been improvements over the last decade, a huge disparity still exists between genders.

One of the representative statistics I often cite on is that women currently only account for about 7% of fintech startup founders. I believe there are a few reasons for this. One of the leading causes, though, is that women don’t have the same network of high-level experts in place who can serve as mentors for the next generation. This isn’t a problem unique to fintech; it permeates many STEM-related fields.

I am blessed to have a platform and to be able to use my voice to speak up for other women wanting to succeed in tech-related businesses. I wanted to create something that would help the future generation of female leaders achieve their goals and break down barriers.

This is what LIFT: Elevating Women in Fintech is all about.

How the Program Works

LIFT is a free mentorship program that seeks to bridge the gap between established women in the industry, and those who are still trying to find their way.

Participants are asked to identify the professional challenge they are facing. This can range from interview advice, to making a big career move, or navigating through difficult workplace conversations. Once they have submitted a request, a virtual meeting is arranged with a mentor.

This meeting is a chance for the two to sit down and discuss the mentee’s unique situation. The mentor can provide actionable, specific advice that will serve to help the mentee advance her career.

I am hopeful that these pairings will be an opportunity for women to hear from these pioneers in the fintech industry. Through advice and the sharing of experience, they will realize that they are capable of achieving the same level of success.

What LIFT Means to Me

I’ve always been passionate about fighting for women in underrepresented STEM fields. I’m a firm believer in the idea that if you see people go on to achieve their goals who look like you, and who come from a similar situation, it can bolster your own strength to believe you can do it, too.

Women need to see female role models and mentors driving for change and excelling in these fields. I’ve spoken before about the need to break down societal norms that have previously prevented women from exploring such interests. I believe LIFT will play an important role in empowering women and female leadership across the sector.

It’s important for women to support one another and spread the idea that they can be successful in any industry.

Before I close, I wanted to extend the offer for all women in senior leadership roles to consider joining LIFT as a mentor. I believe it’s imperative for women at the top to hold the door open for others to follow. That is the path to achieving genuine gender parity in the STEM-related fields.

Mentorship for aspiring leaders can help improve their confidence and build a strong network. It also encourages self-advocacy, and provides key tools for further advancement.

I know the commitment to become a mentor is a big one. However, I truly believe in the efficacy of this program and its impact. A single person can’t do it all…but every one of us can do our part to help.
